What is Aikido ?The word aikido means way (do) of harmony (ai) of mental energy (ki). It is a defensive martial way developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1873-1969) from various classical Japanese weapon and empty hand martial arts.
In addition to being the leading martial artist of his day, master Ueshiba was also a very spiritual man. He hoped that as well as being an effective martial art, aikido would develop better people and hence a better society! Aikido uses skill and timing to control an attacker, teaching students to maximise their potential power with circular movement. It does not need great strength so is suitable for men and women of all ages, while those with strength will have it channelled to even greater effect. As many of aikido's techniques were originally developed to defend against sword or other weapons, aikido today is still very effective against weapon attack. Aikido practise is cooperative and not competitive, allowing students to develop knowledge and skill at their own pace. Progression through the grades (denoted by coloured belts) is therefore very much a matter of individual growth following continuous assessment by the instructor. |
